How to create an instant classic with your first pedal – REVV G3 Review

‘Amp-in-a-box’ is how a lot of companies describe their overdrive and distortion pedals without really delivering on the promise. Out comes REVV with their first-ever pedal(!) to become a staple in the distortion pedal realm for years to come

Disclaimer: This pedal was provided to me by REVV and we have worked together on numerous videos over the years. However, even with a long time collaboration as this the company has no say in the things I mention in the video/post nor do they get to see the content before it is released.

What Is REVV G3?

REVV G3 is an amp-in-a-box type distortion/preamp pedal that replicates the famous sound of the REVV Generator 120 amplifier’s purple channel (hence why the pedal is purple). The pedal is built to the highest standards and hosts a three-band active EQ, Volume and Gain controls, plus a three-way aggression switch that you find on the Generator 120 amp’s purple channel as well.

First Impressions

Even though I’m typing this several years later since the pedal was released, I still remember how I felt when opening the box. The pedal felt sturdy and the purple finish looked great. I was so excited that I forgot to shoot an initial reactions video.

From the first chord, I knew this pedal was different. Unlike other high-gain pedals at the time, the G3 didn’t squash my amp’s clean tone and make it smaller. Instead, what I got was a huge wall of aggressive, yet not shrill distortion that sounded like a great modern metal amp. I couldn’t believe my semi-hollow, vintage-style-pickups-equipped guitar was capable of these kinds of crushing tones.

Why I still have the G3 5 years later

Since I got this pedal in 2018, it has been a staple in my guitar rig. Unlike a lot of other pedals, the G3 still sounds great to me, and I’ve found it incredibly versatile for many situations. Somehow it works with my tele, my semi-hollow guitar, but also a 6-string baritone tuned to B standard.

While the pedal has taken some hits and scratches, it still looks great, and everything functions as it should.

Is REVV G3 Good?

Even though the REVV G3 might seem like ‘just another high-gain distortion,’ I think it’s more than just that. I haven’t had another pedal that works this well with different guitar and amp setups like the G3. I’ve used it in front of the amp, as a preamp pedal into the amp’s loop, but also with digital modelers and plugins. It just works.

The G3 might not be as affordable as some other pedals, but it’s made to the highest standards by people who love music and creating amazing tones.

While I try to stay objective when creating these reviews, with G3, it feels impossible not to praise how good it is.
