A Unique Approach to Volume Control That Actually Works: Black Mountain Roller Volume Review

It might look like something straight out of a steampunk anime, but the Black Mountain Roller Volume is the first volume pedal I’ve genuinely enjoyed using.

Disclaimer: Black Mountain sponsored this content and I got to keep the pedal. However, whether the content is sponsored or not, the company has no say in the things I mention in the video/post.

What is the Black Mountain Roller Volume?

The Black Mountain Roller Volume pedal is a unique approach to volume and expression control. Unlike traditional volume pedals, where you rock a footswitch back and forth, you operate the Roller Volume by placing your foot on the pedal and moving your foot forward and backward.

First Impressions

As soon as I took the volume pedal out of its box, I was impressed by how solid and well-made it felt, which is exactly what you hope for in a pedal you’ll step on countless times.

I’ve had multiple volume pedals on my pedalboards in the past, but none of them have stayed there for long. The design of this pedal is so different that maybe this is the one that sticks.

What’s It Like to Use?

I’ve seen similar steampunk-inspired guitar products before, and many of them have been made with a design-first approach. Luckily, the Black Mountain Roller Volume is different: from the first volume swell onwards, you notice how natural operating the pedal feels. For me, this is the best volume pedal experience I’ve ever had. Besides doing volume swells, I can even mimic a tremolo effect without feeling like I’m about to lose my balance.

From the first roll onwards, I felt completely in control of my volume swells in a way I hadn’t experienced before.

Is the Black Mountain Roller Volume good?

It’s strange to be this excited about a volume pedal. But for someone who has trouble operating traditional volume and expression pedals, the Black Mountain Roller Volume feels like the perfect solution for my needs.

The build quality is superb, and at no point did I feel uncomfortable stepping on the pedal or fear that it might break under my weight. According to Black Mountain, the 500k potentiometer inside the pedal is designed to withstand 7 million cycles, so you can work on your volume swells without worrying about durability.

The tuner output also allows for creative setups beyond simply using the pedal as a volume control.

For me, this is the best volume pedal I’ve ever used.
